Depression

Do you experience a continuous low mood and a feeling of hopelessness? Perhaps you break into tears easily and feel overwhelmed by guilt? Maybe you lack motivation and energy, and have little interest in things that used to make you feel good? These all may be signs of depression.

Everyone feels depressed now and then – and that’s normal. Feeling depressed is like catching a cold – we all get one, and then we get better. So, the occasional bout of low mood or depression is normal and usually nothing to worry about.

But some people find that their bout of depression lasts for weeks or months rather than a couple of days. It’s less off-day and more long-term struggle.

Depression affects people in different ways, but if you find that the “black dog” is visiting and refusing to shift, you might find it useful to talk to somebody who can help.

What are the symptoms and signs of depression?

On the whole, if you’re suffering from a bout of depression, you know all about it. The common symptoms of depression are:

  • A perpetual low mood
  • Inexplicable sadness
  • Tearfulness
  • A sense of guilt
  • Irritability
  • Intolerance of other people’s needs
  • Lack of motivation and interest in anything
  • Indecision
  • Inability to find enjoyment from life
  • Anxiety and worry
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Self-harm (or thoughts of)
  • Low energy levels
  • Lack of libido
  • Lack (or change) of appetite
  • Unusual or irregular sleep patterns (too much or too little)

If you recognise a range of those symptoms, you might be suffering from depression. Try not to worry – there are ways to help.

I have depression, what should I do?

Depression can be tough to live with, and – for most people – the condition will lift over time. But if you can’t wait that long or you feel exhausted by your current situation, you might benefit from talking things through.

There’s a range of therapeutic approaches that can help that don’t rely on medication.

Seeking help is the first step to taking control of your life. It’s never a sign of weakness to admit that you could do with some help; it’s a sign of strength and your resolve to improve your relationships, prospects, and your wellbeing.

Together, we can find the right treatment programme to help improve your life for good. If you notice any of these signs of depression, get in touch and we at Support Room can help you.
